This week at CBPP we focused on health, food assistance, federal taxes, poverty and inequality, housing, Social Security, the economy, and family income support.

On health, Jesse Cross-Call noted that Oklahomans, and the state’s budget, will benefit quickly from the state’s Medicaid expansion.
On food assistance, Zoë Neuberger demonstrated how recovery legislation could help end summer childhood hunger.
On federal taxes, George Fenton described how critics of President Biden’s tax plan are ignoring larger tax advantages at the top. We also released our chart book on the need to rebuild the IRS.
On poverty and inequality, we continued to track the effects of COVID-19 on food, housing, and employment hardships. Danilo Trisi and Matt Saenz updated their report on how economic security programs reduce poverty and racial and ethnic inequities.
On housing, Sonya Acosta explained how the fiscal year 2022 budget appropriations process provides an opportunity to reduce housing hardship.
On Social Security, Kathleen Romig and Sam Washington called for policymakers to expand and simplify Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Romig highlighted that after decades of neglect, it’s time to rebuild SSI.
On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
On family income support, Ali Safawi explained that federal and state policymakers should end bans on people with drug felony convictions receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits.
