In Case You Missed It...
This week at CBPP, we focused on health, state budgets and taxes, Social Security, federal taxes, food assistance, and the economy.
- On health, Aviva Aron-Dine, Chye-Ching Huang, and Samantha Washington reported that the lawsuit to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would cut taxes for the highest-income 0.1 percent of households by an average of $198,000. Aron-Dine and Tara Straw explained why ACA repeal would be even more dangerous during the pandemic and economic crisis. Jessica Schubel noted that expanding Medicaid in Oklahoma and Missouri is a first step to improving health care for American Indian and Alaska Native people. Jennifer Wagner outlined how aggressive outreach can help connect Medicaid enrollees with federal Economic Impact Payments.
- On state budgets and taxes, Wesley Tharpe warned that harmful state cuts loom without more federal aid. Michael Leachman outlined good reasons why states haven’t yet spent all of their Coronavirus Relief Funds.
- On Social Security, Paul N. Van De Water urged policymakers to prevent recession-related Social Security benefit drops.
- On federal taxes, we updated our report on how aggressive state outreach can help reach the 12 million non-filers eligible for stimulus payments.
- On food assistance, we updated our fact sheet on how states are using new flexibility in SNAP to respond to COVID-19 challenges.
- On the economy, we updated our backgrounders on unemployment insurance and how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available, and our chart book tracking the post-Great Recession economy.
