July 16, 2021, 2:54 pm | By CBPP This week we focused on the federal budget and taxes, food assistance, poverty and inequality, housing, family income support, and the economy. On the federal budget and taxes, Chuck Marr detailed how a ProPublica report shows how little the wealthiest pay in taxes and urged policymakers to respond accordingly. Marr also outlined how a proposed financial reporting requirement from President Biden is an integral part of the plan to address the tax gap. We also released a fact sheet on taxes, the wealthy, and creating a fairer system. On food assistance, Steven Carlson, Joseph Llobrera, and Brynne Keith-Jennings stated that more adequate SNAP benefits would help millions of participants afford better food. Lauren Hall and Zoë Neuberger discussed how eligible low-income children are missing out on crucial WIC benefits during the pandemic. We also created an interactive map showing changes in WIC, Medicaid, and SNAP participation by state. On poverty and inequality, Arloc Sherman, Claire Zippel, Robert Gordon, and Danilo Trisi argued that widespread economic insecurity before the pandemic shows the need for a strong recovery package. We also updated our fact sheet tracking the COVID-19 recession’s effects on food, housing, and employment hardships. On housing, Anna Bailey explained how emergency vouchers can help seniors and people with disabilities live in safer, community-based settings. On family income support, Laura Meyer illustrated how recovery legislation should provide employment opportunities for those left behind. On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
