April 23, 2021, 1:52 pm | By CBPP This week at CBPP, we focused on federal taxes, state budgets and taxes, health, food assistance, housing, poverty and inequality, and the economy. On federal taxes, Chuck Marr, Samantha Jacoby, Sam Washington, and George Fenton explained why asking the wealthiest households to pay a fairer amount in tax would help fund a more equitable recovery. We also illustrated how the American Rescue Plan’s expansions of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit will benefit rural residents. On state budgets and taxes, Cortney Sanders, Michael Leachman, and Erica Williams updated their report detailing three principles for an antiracist, equitable state response to COVID-19 and a stronger economic recovery. On health, Sarah Lueck outlined steps the Biden Administration can take to boost access to health coverage. Gideon Lukens showed how Medicaid expansion cuts hospitals’ uncompensated care costs. On food assistance, Ed Bolen, Joseph Llobrera, and Brynne Keith-Jennings encouraged policymakers to permanently end the SNAP three-month cutoff to support an equitable recovery. On housing, Douglas Rice wrote on how upcoming recovery legislation can make lasting progress against housing-related hardships. On poverty and inequality, we updated our fact sheet tracking the COVID-19 recession’s effects on food, housing, and employment hardships. On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
