In Case You Missed It...
This week at CBPP, we focused on poverty and inequality, state budgets and taxes, health, federal taxes, the federal budget, food assistance, and the economy.
- On poverty and inequality, Claire Zippel and Arloc Sherman detailed why bolstering family income is essential to helping children now and in the long term and authored a policy brief summarizing their research. LaDonna Pavetti interviewed Dr. Philip A. Fisher, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Translational Neuroscience at the University of Oregon, on children experiencing distress due to increased hardship. We also updated our fact sheet tracking the COVID-19 recession’s effects on food, housing, and employment hardships.
- On state budgets and taxes, Michael Leachman and Elizabeth McNichol described why additional federal aid for states, localities, tribal nations, and territories is needed despite improved state revenues. Victoria Jackson laid out how state policymakers can strengthen regulation of for-profit colleges to better protect students.
- On health, Jesse Cross-Call analyzed a provision in the House economic relief bill incentivizing states that have not expanded Medicaid to quickly do so to cover millions of uninsured people.
- On federal taxes, Sam Washington explained how expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit would benefit American Indians and Alaska Natives.
- On the federal budget, Paul N. Van de Water examined the latest Congressional Budget Office projections showing federal interest payments are expected to remain low for several years.
- On food assistance, Dottie Rosenbaum, Zoë Neuberger, Brynne Keith-Jennings, and Catlin Nchako updated their report analyzing the nutrition provisions of the House relief package.
