Policy Basics

The School Lunch and School Breakfast programs provide free and reduced-price meals to nearly 30 million schoolchildren with low incomes, while WIC provides nutritious food for more than 6 million low-income women, infants, and children.

We promote efforts to increase school meal participation for children from low-income families through tools like the Community Eligibility Provision, which allows schools in low-income neighborhoods to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. We also work to increase participation among eligible families in WIC by promoting policies and practices that make it easier to enroll and participate.
