BEYOND THE NUMBERS
In Case You Missed It…
This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget and taxes, health, food assistance, income security, the economy, and Social Security.
- On the federal budget and taxes, CBPP President Sharon Parrott described the ten years of deep cuts that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s bill would exact in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. David Reich detailed how the bill would force cuts of $3.6 trillion over ten years by capping funding for annually appropriated programs. Samantha Jacoby cautioned that McCarthy’s bill would let wealthy tax cheats off the hook and severely diminish the IRS’s ability to deliver the technology and customer service taxpayers deserve.
- On health, Laura Harker noted that McCarthy’s bill resurrects the failed policy of taking Medicaid coverage away from people who don’t meet a work-reporting requirement. Gideon Lukens calculated that more than 10 million people would be at risk of losing Medicaid coverage under the McCarthy proposal. Harker explained that proposals to take Medicaid away from people not meeting work-reporting requirements would keep people from needed health care.
- On food assistance, Ty Jones Cox testified before a Senate Agriculture Committee panel on the effectiveness of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the need to protect and strengthen the program in the upcoming farm bill. Jones Cox also noted that the McCarthy bill would worsen an already harsh and harmful SNAP policy that takes food assistance away from people who don’t meet a work requirement.
- On income security, Aditi Shrivastava warned that the McCarthy bill would further restrict the reach of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
- On the economy, CBPP’s Nick Gwyn and Jenna Gerry of the National Employment Law Project cautioned that the unemployment insurance system is unprepared for another recession.
- On Social Security, Kathleen Romig outlined what the 2023 trustees report shows about Social Security’s finances. We updated our backgrounders on the Social Security trust funds and on top ten facts about Social Security.
