April 9, 2021, 4:49 pm | By CBPP This week at CBPP, we focused on health, the federal budget and taxes, food assistance, poverty and inequality, and the economy. On health, Sarah Lueck and Tara Straw reported how policymakers can build on the Affordable Care Act to expand health coverage and improve care affordability. Lueck also outlined how upcoming economic recovery legislation can help millions of people buy health insurance. Jennifer Wagner encouraged the Biden Administration to withdraw all approvals of Medicaid work requirements. Jesse Cross-Call explained that Medicaid expansion boosts health coverage and services for people with disabilities. On the federal budget and taxes, we released a statement from Sharon Parrott on the President’s discretionary funding request for fiscal year 2022. Kathleen Romig urged policymakers to invest in paid leave in order to build an equitable recovery. Chuck Marr, Samantha Jacoby, George Fenton, and Sam Washington detailed how increasing the corporate tax rate would make taxes fairer and help fund an equitable recovery. On food assistance, Dottie Rosenbaum wrote on a new Biden Administration policy providing additional emergency benefits to the lowest-income SNAP participants. On poverty and inequality, Claire Zippel highlighted new data showing that hardship rates dropped in March but many still borrow to get by. We updated our fact sheet tracking the COVID-19 recession’s effects on food, housing, and employment hardships. On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available and our chart book tracking the post-Great Recession economy.
