BEYOND THE NUMBERS
In Case You Missed It...
This week at CBPP, we focused on food assistance, health, federal taxes, and the economy.
- On food assistance, Katie Bergh urged Congress to delay an unprecedented shifting of SNAP costs onto states. Luis Nuñez and Elisabet Eppes highlighted how the President's proposed 2027 budget would take away $1.4 billion in fruit and vegetable benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
- On health, Symonne Singleton explained the new suite of technical tools the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services developed to help states implement Medicaid work requirements. Jennifer Wagner, Ed Bolen, Alicia Huguelet, and Dottie Rosenbaum detailed how states can coordinate new Medicaid and SNAP work requirements to streamline eligibility determinations and minimize coverage loss.
- On federal taxes, we updated our backgrounder on where federal tax revenues come from.
- On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on the federal minimum wage.

The Center was active on social media this week. Here are some of our posts:
- Chuck Marr posted a thread to X and Bluesky explaining how proposed IRS budget cuts would weaken enforcement, reduce audits of high-income taxpayers, and increase the risk of tax evasion.
- Claire Heyison and Gideon Lukens posted threads to X and Bluesky, respectively, explaining that Affordable Care Act marketplace enrollment dropped by 1.2 million and those who stayed are paying more for worse coverage following the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits for marketplace plans.
- Kris Cox posted a thread to Bluesky on a proposed bill introduced by Rep. McDonald-Rivet that expands the Earned Income Tax Credit, supporting low- and moderate-income families and helping more than 5 million low-income children under the age of 4. Kris followed up with additional analysis of the bill on Bluesky.
- Whitney Jemison posted a thread to X and Bluesky on how states are addressing the challenge of protecting and raising revenue to support the vital programs their communities rely on.
- Will Fischer posted a thread to X and Bluesky on a proposed Department of Housing and Urban Development rule that could force mixed-status families to choose between losing housing assistance or separating their families.
- Kathleen Romig posted a thread to Bluesky calling on Congress to address the troubling patterns that have emerged at the Social Security Administration and IRS and compromised service for millions of people who rely on these agencies.
