This week at CBPP, we focused on state budgets and taxes, food assistance, and housing.

On state budgets and taxes, Whitney Tucker explained that states can use the Black Women Best framework to reform their tax codes and build more equitable and just economies; Black Women Best creator Janelle Jones wrote the report foreword. Tucker also underscored that states should center Black women in tax reform. Michael Mitchell cautioned against so-called "tough-on-crime" bills in Louisiana and Kentucky and encouraged state lawmakers to prioritize policies that will improve public safety.
On food assistance, Katie Bergh and Lauren Hall noted that Chair Thompson’s plan would cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and ignore scientific evidence in Thrifty Food Plan updates.
On housing, Peggy Bailey and Anna Bailey emphasized that solutions to homelessness are within reach regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the upcoming case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson.
