On state budgets and taxes, we released several pieces in a series on how states can recession-proof their economies and promote opportunity: Bernie Gallagher described how strong rainy day funds can help mitigate damage from economic downturns; Whitney Tucker noted that states should strengthen their unemployment insurance systems to weather a possible downturn ahead; and Iris Hinh pointed out that the risk of a recession highlights the need for states to support higher education. On health, Farah Erzouki explained why states should streamline Medicaid enrollment and renewal for older adults and people with disabilities ahead of unwinding. Paul Van de Water updated our paper on why Medicare is not “bankrupt.” On food assistance, Ty Jones Cox described why the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is and remains our most effective tool to combat hunger. Lauren Hall and Catlin Nchako updated our state-by-state fact sheets on who benefits from SNAP.
