December 10, 2021, 4:30 pm | By CBPP This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, state budgets and taxes, housing, health, and the economy. On the federal budget, Richard Kogan showed how Build Back Better would save about $2 trillion in its second decade. Joel Friedman highlighted three key facts in assessing Build Back Better's fiscal impact. David Reich warned how a full-year funding freeze would further squeeze non-defense programs. On state budgets and taxes, Samantha Waxman described how states enacting wealth taxes to support pandemic recovery is a step toward improving equity. On housing, Will Fischer explained how vouchers can help families afford homes, with little impact on market rents. Sonya Acosta underscored how tribal housing funding is a critical component of Build Back Better. On health, Tara Straw highlighted little-noticed provisions in Build Back Better that would improve health coverage affordability. We also updated our fact sheet on coverage for COVID-19 testing, vaccinations, and treatment. On the economy, Chad Stone emphasized that inflation concerns should not impede the enactment of Build Back Better. We also updated our backgrounders tracking the post-Great Recession economy and how many weeks of unemployment compensation are currently available.
