BEYOND THE NUMBERS
In Case You Missed It...
This week at CBPP, we focused on family income support, poverty and inequality, the economy, state budgets and taxes, and housing.
-
On family income support, LaDonna Pavetti and Ali Safawi explained how, while TANF cash assistance helps families, the program is not the success some claim. Ife Floyd, LaDonna Pavetti, Laura Meyer, Ali Safawi, Liz Schott, Evelyn Bellew, and Abigail Magnus discussed how TANF policies reflect a racist legacy of cash assistance. Schott, Floyd, and Pavetti stated that cash assistance should promote equity. We also updated our chart book on TANF, 25 years after passage of the law that created it.
-
On poverty and inequality, Arloc Sherman, Ali Safawi, Zoë Neuberger, and Will Fischer highlighted how recovery proposals adopt proven approaches to reducing poverty and increasing social mobility.
-
On the economy, Chad Stone noted that the jobs recovery continued in July but that those losing jobs face weakened Unemployment Insurance protections. We also updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
-
On state budgets and taxes, Ed Lazere noted that the American Rescue Plan’s state and local funds are helping families and communities.
-
On housing, we released a fact sheet on how more housing vouchers are needed to help older adults afford stable homes in the community.
