BEYOND THE NUMBERS

This week at CBPP we focused on housing, health, food assistance, Social Security, federal taxes, state budgets and taxes, and the economy.

On housing, Will Fischer explained how federal rental assistance plans from President Trump and from Rep. Dennis Ross would harm low-income people in every state. Alicia Mazzara provided state and metro area estimates of rent increases under the Ross and Trump plans for households receiving rental assistance. We also created an infographic explaining how the Trump plan would raise rents on these households, and a table comparing the Ross and Trump plans to current law.
On health, Jesse Cross-Call warned that Michigan’s Medicaid proposal would reduce coverage and access to care. Judith Solomon highlighted one provision of the bill that would put health coverage for 670,000 Michiganders at risk. Shelby Gonzales described how a radical potential change to immigration policy from the Trump Administration could cause big health coverage losses among U.S. citizen children.
On food assistance, Robert Greenstein stated that the nutrition provisions of the farm bill proposed by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow represent an important bipartisan step toward renewing SNAP (formerly food stamps). We also updated a report from Ed Bolen, Lexin Cai, Stacy Dean, Brynne Keith-Jennings, Catlin Nchako, Dorothy Rosenbaum, and Elizabeth Wolkomir on how the House Agriculture Committee’s farm bill would increase food insecurity and hardship and a series of briefs on who the House farm bill would harm.
On Social Security, Paul Van de Water noted that the 2018 Social Security and Medicare trustees’ reports confirm that the programs face manageable financial challenges. He also previewed the reports’ release.
On federal taxes, we explained how the corporate tax cut enacted under the 2017 tax law benefits the wealthiest, loses needed revenue, and encourages tax avoidance.
On state budgets and taxes, Erica Williams and Samantha Waxman detailed how much state earned income tax credits would cost in fiscal year 2019. Michael Mazerov concluded that Oregon should reinstate its tax haven law.
On the economy, we updated our chart book on the legacy of the Great Recession.
