Thank You to Free Tax Volunteers

Despite tax law changes and new tax forms — which require intensive new training — volunteers at free tax preparation sites continued helping millions of Americans file their taxes this year.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program provide free tax preparation services to low-income households through dedicated, IRS-certified tax volunteers. About 90,000 volunteers at almost 10,000 sites have helped file 2.98 million tax returns this year.

Free tax volunteers bring a critical service to communities, providing important tax information and helping families navigate important tax changes. Many families rely on their tax refund to take care of their daily needs. And, in a year when tax law changes confused many taxpayers about their refund amounts, free tax sites explained the changes and guided taxpayers through them.

A huge thank you to the amazing volunteers and staff who make these services possible.
