This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, food assistance, health, and the economy.

On the federal budget, Sharon Parrott released a statement on how President Trump’s 2027 budget proposal fails to serve families and communities who are struggling to afford necessities amid higher costs and affordability challenges. Joel Friedman, Sonali Master, Brendan Duke, Joe Carlile, and Richard Kogan released an analysis of 2026 non-defense appropriations, identifying gaps and challenges policymakers should address as they look ahead to 2027.
On health, Nicole Rapfogel highlighted new open enrollment data for the Affordable Care Act marketplaces showing that after the expiration of premium tax credit (PTC) enhancements, enrollees are facing higher costs for lower-quality coverage.
On food assistance, Katie Bergh underscored a Colorado judge’s order to block the Department of Agriculture’s unlawful attempt to impose a harmful SNAP “pilot program” on the state, which would have forced it to immediately recertify hundreds of thousands of households’ eligibility or have federal SNAP funding withheld.
On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on the maximum number of weeks of unemployment insurance available in each state.
