This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, health, income security, and food assistance.

On the federal budget, Brendan Duke called on Congress to reject a reckless balanced budget amendment which will guarantee cuts to necessary programs and make it more difficult to raise revenue. Samantha Jacoby called on policymakers to raise corporate tax rates as a more efficient and equitable alternative to regressive and economically harmful tariffs. Nick Gwyn warned that a new executive order convening a task force on fraud may signal the Trump Administration will continue to try to block basic needs assistance.
On health, Elizabeth Zhang highlighted how almost 3 million uninsured adults could become eligible for Medicaid if their states adopted expansion. Shelby Gonzales explained how new restrictions introduced in the harmful Republican megabill will take away affordable health coverage from many people with lawful immigration statuses.
On income security, Diana Azevedo-McCaffrey submitted testimony to the Council of the District of Columbia Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety in support of a bill that would help make Washington, D.C.’s child support program more supportive of parents and children participating in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
On food assistance, Dottie Rosenbaum, Joseph Llobrera, Catlin Nchako, and Luis Nuñez updated their report on the importance of protecting SNAP’s “broad-based categorical eligibility” policy to better support working families with low incomes.
