This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, food assistance, health, and federal taxes.
- On the federal budget, Sharon Parrott stressed in a statement that Republicans must negotiate with Democrats to make a funding deal that prevents health care costs from spiking and protects funding laws. Sam Berger and Devin O’Connor highlighted a new proposal that would let Congress enact guardrails against the illegal withholding of funds by the Trump Administration and ensure that 2026 funding reaches the communities it is meant to serve.
- On food assistance, CBPP emphasized that stopping the Department of Agriculture’s food insecurity survey will obscure the effect of Trump Administration policies on hunger.
- On health, Allison Orris and Gbenga Ajilore explained that new information shows that the Republican megabill’s rural health fund will do little to offset the bill’s harm to rural providers and residents. Jennifer Sullivan and Nicole Rapfogel outlined five key changes to Affordable Care Act marketplaces amid uncertainty over premium tax credit enhancements. Farah Erzouki urged states to voluntarily implement the recent Medicaid eligibility and enrollment rules, despite the Republican megabill’s moratorium.
