BEYOND THE NUMBERS
In Case You Missed It. . .
This week at CBPP, we focused on the impacts of the House Republican reconciliation plan.
- CBPP President Sharon Parrott stressed that House Republicans’ agenda is clear: stripping health care and food assistance away from millions of people and raising families’ costs, while showering ever larger tax breaks on the wealthiest households.
- On the federal budget, Nick Gwyn clarified that the House Republican plan would take away health care and food assistance from people who don’t meet red-tape-laden work requirements.
- On health, Jennifer Wagner explained that making people renew their Medicaid coverage more frequently, as the House Energy and Commerce budget reconciliation bill proposes, would increase errors and lead eligible people to lose health coverage. Gideon Lukens, Elizabeth Zhang, and Shelby Gonzales warned that the House Energy and Commerce bill would cut Medicaid funding to states that provide health coverage to people who are undocumented. Zhang and Lukens detailed the millions of people who would have Medicaid coverage taken away by a new work requirement in the bill, with state-by-state and congressional district data.
- On food assistance, Katie Bergh and Dottie Rosenbaum explained that the House plan would require states to pay a portion of food benefit costs for the first time. Bergh, Catlin Nchako, and Luis Nuñez calculated that nearly 11 million people — about 1 in 4 SNAP participants — live in households that would be at risk of losing at least some of their food assistance under a provision that would broaden SNAP’s harsh and red-tape-laden work requirement.
- On federal taxes, Brendan Duke detailed how the House Republican agenda boosts the wealthy but does little for low-income families.
