In Case You Missed It. . .

This week at CBPP, we focused on federal taxes, the federal budget, Social Security, poverty and inequality, and state budgets and taxes.

On federal taxes, Chuck Marr, Samantha Jacoby, Kris Cox, and Stephanie Hingtgen presented what a better tax bill would look like compared to tax cuts for the wealthy that would be paid for by harmful proposed cuts to health care, food assistance, and student loans. Malik Woullard emphasized the need for policymakers to address the 650,000 children in veteran families who are left out of the full Child Tax Credit in their upcoming tax bill. Kris Cox pointed out that a new agreement between the IRS and ICE poses privacy risks for all taxpayers.
On the federal budget, Brendan Duke detailed how the emerging reconciliation bill flunks basic rules for fighting recessions.
On Social Security, Kiran Rachamallu stressed that immigrants contribute greatly to the Social Security trust fund’s solvency, even if they themselves are not eligible to receive benefits in their lifetimes.
On poverty and inequality, in the latest in our series of briefs, we described how Republican proposals to reduce access to food assistance, health care, and other critical assistance would harm children, veterans, and people with disabilities.
On state budgets and taxes, we updated our state tax cut tracker with an entry on Mississippi’s extreme new policy to phase out personal income taxes.
We also updated our resource tracking harmful executive actions with an entry summarizing how four more executive orders will harm the climate and low-income communities.
