This week at CBPP, we focused on federal taxes, health, climate change, housing, income security, and the economy.

On federal taxes, Kris Cox and Stephanie Hingtgen stressed the importance of expanding the Child Tax Credit to the 17 million children who are currently left out because their families’ incomes are too low. We also summarized how Republican tax cuts for high-income earners and price-hiking tariffs would harm families.
On health, Gideon Lukens and Elizabeth Zhang detailed by congressional district how many people could be at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage they can’t show they meet inflexible, burdensome work requirements proposed by Republican congressional leaders and conservative think tanks. Claire Heyison examined a House Republican plan to resurrect a 2017 proposal that would raise taxes for people who buy their health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces.
On climate change, Rachel Jacobson, Mikaela Tajo, and Samantha Jacoby warned that with federal climate funding at risk, policymakers should protect benefits for those most impacted and with the fewest resources.
On housing, we summarized how Republican proposals could take away rental assistance for many households. Sonya Acosta emphasized that to better meet record levels of need and keep families housed, Congress must increase 2025 funding for housing assistance.
On income security, we summarized how Republican proposals could target vulnerable people’s income assistance with deep cuts to programs helping low-income people.
On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available per state.
