This week at CBPP, we focused primarily on the federal budget, the economy, state budgets and taxes, and income security.

On the federal budget, CBPP President Sharon Parrott offered commentary on how the coming State of the Union address and President’s budget are opportunities to put forward a vision for a stronger, more prosperous nation. Joel Friedman and Richard Kogan stressed how the House Republican pledge to cut appropriated programs to their 2022 level would have severe effects for non-defense programs.
On the economy, Nick Gwyn described how pandemic unemployment programs saved millions from severe hardship, and how permanent unemployment insurance needs reform. We updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
On state budgets and taxes, Don Griswold and Michael Mazerov urged other states to follow New York’s lead and shut down tax-avoiding “ING trusts.”
On income security, Gina Azito Thompson, Diana Azevedo-McCaffrey, and Da’Shon Carr updated our report explaining that increases in TANF cash benefit levels are critical to help families meet their basic needs, especially in light of rising costs. They also updated our brief summarizing the findings.
