In Case You Missed It…

| By CBPP

This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, federal taxes, health, state budgets and taxes, food assistance, and the economy.

  • On the federal budget, Sharon Parrott, Richard Kogan, and Roderick Taylor highlighted the need for a new budget deal to avert cuts and invest in national priorities.

  • On federal taxes, we explained six ways the 2017 tax law hurts low- and moderate-income households. Chye-Ching Huang testified before the House Budget Committee that the fundamentally flawed tax law doesn’t address the economic challenges that low- and moderate-income people face, and it includes provisions that will hurt many of them.

  • On health, Jesse Cross-Call warned about a bill in West Virginia that would take Medicaid coverage away from at least 46,000 non-elderly adults who can’t meet proposed work requirements. Jessica Schubel noted that policymakers in Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, and New Mexico are reconsidering restrictive Medicaid waiver policies. Jennifer Wagner clarified the results of an audit of Louisiana’s Medicaid program that have been mischaracterized.

  • On state budgets and taxes, Cortney Sanders pointed to research that shows the powerful positive effects of combining early education and K-12 investments.

  • On food assistance, Hilary Dockray, Julie Silas, Elisabet Eppes, Georgia Machell, and Zoë Neuberger launched a guide to help WIC agencies develop digital tools.

  • On the economy, we updated our chart book on the legacy of the Great Recession as well as our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
