Media Advisory: Millions Losing SNAP Underscores Urgency for Congress to Delay Cost Shift
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Invest in Louisiana will host a press call to discuss the SNAP emergency unfolding across the country and urgent need for Congress to address the sharp decline in SNAP participation following the enactment of last year’s reconciliation law.
After the law took effect, SNAP participation nationwide fell by more than 4 million people between the law’s July 2025 enactment and March 2026. The 2025 reconciliation law shifted enormous new SNAP costs to states. As a result, states have rushed to limit their costs, causing many families with kids to lose the help they need to put food on the table. More than 1.5 million fewer children are likely receiving SNAP, based on analysis of available data from 17 states.
Speakers will discuss the impact of these cuts on communities across the country and explain why Congress must delay the cost shift for all states before more families lose SNAP.
