This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, state budgets and taxes, and health and food assistance.

On the federal budget, Sam Berger and Devin O’Connor condemned the Trump Administration’s weaponization of federal funding through targeted funding freezes and cuts aimed primarily at blue states.
On state budgets and taxes, Samantha Waxman emphasized that Congressional Republicans should not block a law the District of Columbia passed to ensure that federal tax cuts enacted last year don’t unbalance D.C.’s budget. Don Griswold submitted written testimony in favor of closing a tax loophole that allows large corporations in Maine to avoid income taxes. Griswold also emphasized the importance of corporate fair share taxes in supporting public services in the wake of sweeping federal cuts.
On health and food assistance, we updated our landscape assessment detailing state-by-state eligibility, operations, and outcome data on Medicaid, SNAP, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

In the wake of the shooting deaths of two people by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis, Sharon Parrott and Shelby Gonzales posted threads to X and Bluesky calling on the Senate to use the annual budget process to protect people and communities.
Sharon Parrott followed up with a thread to X and Bluesky explaining that reworking the Department of Homeland Security funding bill to establish guardrails and protect people’s basic rights and safety does not prevent Congress from passing the other five funding bills.
Anna Bailey posted a thread to X and Bluesky on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s annual report on the national point-in-time homelessness count, which is expected to show homelessness dropped modestly in the year leading up to President Trump taking office.
Chuck Marr posted a thread to X and Bluesky setting the record straight on the Trump Administration’s tax cuts, which are tilted to the rich and, for most ordinary families, won’t offset cost increases from tariffs.
Zoë Neuberger posted a thread to X and Bluesky on the effectiveness of WIC in providing nutritious foods and vital services to families with low incomes.
