In Case You Missed It…
This week at CBPP, we focused on health, immigration, housing, Social Security, and federal and state taxes.
- On health, CBPP President Sharon Parrott released a statement noting that Senate Republicans blocked a bill to extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credit enhancements, which would have prevented health care cost spikes for millions. Allie Gardner underscored that new guidance on the Republican megabill’s Medicaid work requirements provides little clarity for states facing a tight implementation timeline.
- On immigration, Margot Dankner, Shelby Gonzales, Elizabeth Lower-Basch, and Kiran Rachamallu summarized the harmful Republican megabill’s anti-immigrant provisions, including cuts to health coverage, food assistance, and tax credits for millions of immigrants with lawful status and their families.
- On housing, Erik Gartland and Sonya Acosta explained that the Trump Administration is reportedly planning to deny housing benefits to entire households if even one member is ineligible due to immigration status, eliminating the proration approach under long-standing, bipartisan practice.
- On Social Security, Kathleen Romig warned that the Trump Administration’s legally dubious policy of sharing Social Security data with the Department of Homeland Security to reverify voters’ citizenship risks disenfranchising eligible voters.
- On federal taxes, Samantha Jacoby asserted that the Treasury Department should reject lobbying efforts to further weaken the corporate minimum tax. Chuck Marr emphasized that the Trump Administration’s plan to end the IRS’s free tax filing program in favor of relying on for-profit tax preparers is a mistake that will primarily impact taxpayers with low and moderate incomes. Kiran Rachamallu highlighted the Treasury Department’s is seeking to wrongfully deny tax credits to lawfully present immigrants.
- On state taxes, Samantha Waxman emphasized that states should consider legislation that provides advance tax credits to help families deal with the rising cost of basic needs and highlighted Minnesota, which has already implemented this option.
