This is our final edition of In Case You Missed It for 2024. CBPP wishes you restful and happy holidays!

This week, we focused on food assistance, the federal budget, health, and housing.

On food assistance, CBPP Vice President for Food Assistance Ty Jones Cox applauded the bipartisan funding agreement, which ultimately failed, for continuing to reimburse SNAP participants who have their benefits stolen. After Republican lawmakers removed the provision in a second bill, Jones Cox stressed in a tweet thread that victims of this crime should not bear the costs. Separately, Zoë Neuberger updated her paper on how states are adjusting their policies so more people can enroll in WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children).
On the federal budget, Richard Kogan and Joel Friedman highlighted what to look for in January’s congressional budget, as Republican leaders seek to advance an agenda to cut health coverage and food assistance while extending tax cuts for wealthy households and corporations. Friedman and Kogan also explained three things to know about hitting the debt limit. We also updated our backgrounder on non-defense discretionary programs.
On health, Laura Harker underscored why Georgia’s Medicaid experiment is the latest to show that work requirements restrict health care access.
On food assistance and health, we released a tool to facilitate collaboration between state WIC and Medicaid agencies so more eligible people participate in WIC.
On housing, Victoria Bowden and Urvi Patel explained how states and local governments can support people experiencing homelessness or housing instability through the use of guaranteed income programs.
