This week at CBPP, we focused on federal taxes, health, state budgets and taxes, and the economy.
- On federal taxes, Kris Cox, Chuck Marr, Sarah Calame, and Stephanie Hingtgen emphasized that expanding the Child Tax Credit should be the top tax priority in upcoming economic legislation. Chuck Marr and Samantha Jacoby explained that the pass-through deduction is tilted heavily to the wealthy, is costly, and should expire as scheduled.
- On health, Sarah Lueck outlined harmful health proposals in the House that would undermine consumer protections and expand high-income tax benefits. We also updated our resource tracking states’ unwinding from Medicaid continuous coverage.
- On state budgets and taxes, Michael Leachman described how New Jersey’s proposed “StayNJ” tax credit, which would subsidize home ownership for people over age 65 with high-paid jobs or substantial investment income, is not well designed.
- On the economy, we updated our backgrounders on the recovery from the pandemic recession and on how many weeks of unemployment insurance are available.
