This week at CBPP, we focused on Social Security, food assistance, federal taxes, housing, state budget and taxes, and climate.

On Social Security, Kathleen Romig issued a statement on the 2026 Social Security trustees’ report, underscoring how the Trump Administration’s policies have depleted the program’s finances, putting essential benefits at risk.
On food assistance, Ashley Blair, a lived experience consultant, explained that virtual services are vital to reducing barriers to participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and urged Congress to make virtual services a permanent feature of the program.
On federal taxes, Josephine Cureton and Samantha Jacoby warned against the proposed cuts for 2027 to the already strained IRS budget that would hinder the agency’s ability to effectively collect legally owed taxes.
On housing, Will Fischer stressed that policymakers should both increase housing supply and expand rental assistance to ameliorate rising home costs and help people with low incomes afford housing. We updated our backgrounders on public housing, federal rental assistance, the Housing Choice Voucher Program, project-based vouchers, and Section 8 project-based rental assistance.
On state budget and taxes, we updated our state tax cut tracker with a post on Georgia’s new law that introduces tax cuts that benefit the wealthy while cutting investments in essential public services.
On climate, we released a backgrounder on climate change and state budgets.
