This week at CBPP, we focused on state budgets and taxes, federal taxes, food assistance, Social Security, and the economy.
- On state budgets and taxes, Cortney Sanders and Coty Novak stressed that Kentucky’s proposals to cut taxes and public benefit programs would weigh heavily on families, especially low-income households and communities of color. Bernie Gallagher maintained that Kansas, and other states, should reject harmful tax and spending limits. Iris Hinh pointed out that states must address K-12 unfinished learning for an equitable recovery.
- On federal taxes, Javier Balmaceda explained that tax credit expansions are expected to significantly reduce poverty in Puerto Rico.
- On food assistance, Joseph Llobrera noted that a recent update to the Thrifty Food Plan helps millions of families add healthier foods to their diet.
- On Social Security, we updated our backgrounder on Social Security Disability Insurance.
- On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are currently available. We also updated our chart book tracking the post-Great Recession economy.
