BEYOND THE NUMBERS

This week at CBPP, we focused on federal taxes, health, state budgets and taxes, Social Security, housing, and income security.

On federal taxes, Chuck Marr highlighted seven charts on the 2017 Trump tax law, explaining why Congress should set a new course ahead of Tax Day. Marr also noted that key Senate Republicans’ position on the Child Tax Credit would weaken the House tax bill’s support for kids and families. Roxy Caines examined how the IRS’s Direct File pilot provides free tax filing and boosts tax system equity, and Kayla Williams pointed out that Tax Day highlights the IRS’s progress and the need to protect and replenish funding.
On health, Claire Heyison, Jennifer Sullivan, and Sarah Lueck published their findings from the Marketplace Affordability Project on strategies to address marketplace enrollees’ cost challenges. Heyison underscored that the next round of Affordable Care Act improvements should focus on marketplace cost sharing.
On state budgets and taxes, Wesley Tharpe drew attention to five state tax trends to watch as Tax Day approaches.
On Social Security, Paul Van de Water noted that the Social Security Administration will need greater investment in 2025 to turn around its customer service crisis.
On housing, Will Fischer highlighted that lawmakers should prioritize improving rental assistance for people struggling to afford housing.
On income security, Aditi Shrivastava emphasized that states should protect guaranteed income initiatives and other unrestricted cash programs.
