Roundup: CBPP’s Same-Day Analyses of the New Census Figures

The Census Bureau released figures today on health coverage, poverty, and median income in 2014.  We’ve collected our analyses of the new data here.

• Greenstein: New Census Data Show Historic Health Coverage Gains, Though Disappointing Results on Poverty and Income
  Today’s Census data provide striking evidence that health reform is dramatically reducing the ranks of the uninsured, with 2014 witnessing the largest single-year drop on record — along with other evidence, however, that the economic recovery has yet to do much to reduce poverty or raise the typical household’s income.
• Large Health Coverage Gains in 2014, New Census Data Show
  The share of Americans who are uninsured fell sharply, from 13.3 percent in 2013 to 10.4 percent in 2014.
• 2014’s Historic Gain in Health Coverage
  The 2.9 percentage-point decline in 2014 in the share of Americans who are uninsured — and the 8.8 million decline in the number of uninsured — mark the largest single-year reductions on record. 
• States Not Expanding Medicaid Falling Further Behind Expansion States
  States that have adopted health reform’s Medicaid expansion had a substantially lower uninsured rate in 2014 than states that haven’t.
• Safety Net Programs Lift Millions From Poverty, New Census Data Show
  Safety net programs — from Social Security to food and housing assistance to working-family tax credits — kept millions of people above the poverty line in 2014.
• SNAP Kept 4.7 Million Americans Out of Poverty Last Year
  SNAP (formerly food stamps) lifted 4.7 million Americans out of poverty in 2014. 
• Working-Family Tax Credits Lift Millions Out of Poverty
  The Earned Income Tax Credit and low-income portion of the Child Tax Credit together lifted about 10 million Americans out of poverty in 2014.
