In Case You Missed It...

This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget and taxes, immigration, health, housing, food assistance, state budgets and taxes, and housing.

• On the federal budget and taxes, we identified the harmful impact the House Republicans’ reconciliation bill would have on seniors and children. Samantha Jacoby highlighted how tax breaks in the bill would deepen income inequality by disproportionately benefiting high-income households. Meanwhile, Sam Berger detailed how the bill’s new red tape could deter eligible families from accessing benefits.
• On immigration, Margot Dankner warned the House Republicans’ reconciliation bill turns away from a national commitment to support people fleeing violence and persecution by taking food assistance and health coverage away from them.
• On health, we explained that the House reconciliation bill would take health coverage away from millions of people and dramatically raise health care costs for millions more. We also detailed how unnecessary and burdensome work requirements for Medicaid would risk health coverage for millions of low-paid workers.
• On food assistance, we explained that the bill would dramatically raise costs and reduce food assistance for millions of people, including more than 2 million children, by cutting federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by about 30 percent. Elisabet Eppes noted how President Trump’s fiscal year 2026 budget would slash fruit and vegetable benefits for millions of participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
• On state budgets and taxes, Wesley Tharpe, Katie Bergh, and Allison Orris detailed how the House Republican reconciliation bill would force states to cut food assistance, health care, and other vital services. We also updated our state tax cuts tracker with an entry on how Texas is hurtling toward fiscal instability, as lawmakers have pushed through a sweeping school voucher program and massive, untargeted property tax cuts.
• On housing, Will Fischer described how proposals to expand the Housing and Urban Development Department’s “Moving to Work” authority would harm people struggling to afford housing and pave the way for deep cuts to rental assistance.
