This week at CBPP, we focused on health, food assistance, the economy, family income support, federal taxes, state budgets, and housing.

On health, Hannah Katch explained that a recent decision by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services opened the door to state restrictions on Medicaid beneficiaries’ access to medications. Halley Cloud pointed out that the Administration’s cut in marketplace enrollment assistance will make it harder for consumers to get comprehensive health coverage. Tara Straw recapped several bills before the House Ways and Means Committee that would expand health savings accounts and weaken insurance marketplaces. Anna Bailey, Peggy Bailey, Hannah Katch, and Judith Solomon updated their assessment of the Medicaid bills in the House opioid package. Paul Van de Water updated his report explaining that Medicare faces financing challenges but isn’t on the verge of bankruptcy, as some policymakers have claimed.
On food assistance, we updated a series of policy briefs explaining how the SNAP (food stamp) cuts in the House farm bill would hurt women, children, veterans, and people with disabilities and in general increase food insecurity and hardship.
On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on unemployment compensation and our chart book on the legacy of the Great Recession.
On family income support, Liz Schott and LaDonna Pavetti described how potential changes to the House bill reauthorizing the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program would discourage states from helping those who most need help.
On federal taxes, Paul Van de Water urged policymakers not to further delay the Affordable Care Act’s excise tax on high-cost health plans.
On state budgets, Erica Williams explained that a growing number of states are boosting opportunity for young immigrants by expanded college access.
On housing, Alison Bell praised House passage of the Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration, which would help low-income families with vouchers live in communities with more opportunities.
