This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, food assistance, health, and income security.

On the federal budget, Brendan Duke testified before the Senate Budget Committee, explaining that our nation faces serious long-term fiscal challenges after 25 years of costly tax cuts weakened revenues and worsened the budget deficit.
On food assistance, Elisabet Eppes, Zoë Neuberger, Jennifer Sullivan, and Sonya Schwartz highlighted that increasing participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) among eligible Medicaid enrollees is a key strategy for improving maternal and child health outcomes.
On health, Jennifer Wagner analyzed new guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to states on how to implement the harmful Republican megabill’s requirement to renew Medicaid eligibility for certain enrollees every six months.
On income security, Diana Azevedo-McCaffrey submitted testimony to the Maryland House Appropriations Committee in support of a bill that would allow parents and caregivers receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to decide whether applying for child support is in the best interests of the child.

Whitney Jemison posted a thread to X and Bluesky celebrating Washington for passing a 9.9 percent tax on income over $1 million, known as a “millionaires’ tax,” and expanding the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to 460,000 households.
The Center posted a video to X, Bluesky, and YouTube featuring Gbenga Ajilore explaining how 2025 economic trends disproportionately harmed Black households and small businesses.
The Center posted another video featuring Ajilore’s insights and analysis on February inflation data to X, Bluesky, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Threads.
