In Case You Missed It...
This week at CBPP, we focused on governance, state budgets and taxes, and food assistance.
- On governance, Sam Berger, Jacob Leibenluft, and Devin O’Connor explained that Congress can restore funding it authorized for 11 programs that the Trump Administration has illegally withheld and enact guardrails to prevent the Administration from illegally withholding funds in the future.
- On state budgets and taxes, Wesley Tharpe explained that Washington’s millionaires’ tax, which is facing a repeal effort, supports vital investment and makes the tax code fairer.
- On food assistance, Peyton McConnell, Emmie DiCicco, and Ed Bolen warned that in responding to the harmful 2025 Republican reconciliation law’s requirement that states pay a portion of SNAP benefits, many state lawmakers pursued proposals in 2026 that could take SNAP away from more eligible families. Lina Verghese and Luis Nuñez highlighted how the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) can strengthen its 50-year legacy of support and improve pregnancy-related health. We updated our guide to SNAP eligibility and benefits for federal fiscal year 2027.

The Center was active on social media this week. Here are some highlights:
- Brendan Duke posted a thread to X and Bluesky on fiscal year 2026 data that highlights the need for policymakers to address the federal deficit and invest in communities.
- Sharon Parrott posted a thread to X and Bluesky on the Trump Administration illegally withholding funds from education programs for migrant farmworkers.
- Kris Cox posted a thread to Bluesky in observance of Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month on the need for Congress to expand the Child Tax Credit so lower income families are eligible for the full credit, which would help support Latinx families who are facing increasing economic strain and the Trump Administration’s cruel detention and deportation machine.
