This week at CBPP, CBPP President Sharon Parrott released a statement on President Trump threatening a lawsuit against the Center for American Progress (CAP) for publishing a report with which he disagrees, demonstrating disregard for the First Amendment and our right to engage in vigorous debate.  

 We also focused on income security, state budgets and taxes, and food assistance.  

  • On income security, Danilo Trisi explained that Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) policies that reduce access to cash assistance and double down on harsh work requirements deepen poverty and do not promote stable employment. Ife Finch Floyd highlighted how congressional and state policy choices over the last 30 years have eroded TANF, leaving many families with inadequate cash assistance.  
  • On state budgets and taxes, we updated our state tax cut tracker with an entry on Arkansas’s fourth income tax cut in four years, which continues the state’s efforts to introduce tax cuts that benefit the wealthy while working families struggle to access health care.  
  • On food assistance, we updated our SNAP participation tracker with new data estimating that roughly 5 million people have lost SNAP food assistance between the harmful 2025 Republican reconciliation law’s enactment in July 2025 and May 2026.  

Chart of the Week — TANF Reaching Fewer Jobless Single Mothers

  • Shelby Gonzales posted a thread to X and Bluesky on new public charge guidance issued by the Trump Administration that gives immigration officers discretion to deny green cards based on whether someone may need public benefits in the future.  
  • Shelby Gonzales posted a thread to X and Bluesky on how the Trump Administration is using its public charge policy to create added barriers to lawful immigration.  
  • Katie Bergh posted a thread to X and Bluesky on how SNAP participation continues to decline, as states grapple with the huge new costs they will soon face and eligible families navigate added red tape.
