This week at CBPP, we focused on food assistance and housing.

On housing, Erik Gartland emphasized that the Trump Administration’s proposed rule to impose harsh work requirements and time limits on people receiving rental assistance would put nearly 3.7 million people, more than half of them children, at risk of losing the support they need to afford housing.
On food assistance, Elisabet Eppes and Luis Nuñez pointed out that the 2027 Agriculture appropriations bill underfunds WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) and cuts the WIC fruit and vegetable benefit for more than 5 million new and expecting parents and young children. Zoë Neuberger and Linnea Sallack analyzed data that show a growing share of infants participating in WIC are breastfed. Neuberger, Nuñez, and Sallack explained how state agencies use federal funds provided to cover all costs associated with delivering services and managing the WIC program. We also updated our SNAP tracker with March data showing that the number of people losing food assistance continues to rise.

Sharon Parrott posted a thread to X and Bluesky on Senate Republicans’ move to use a partisan process to fund ICE and CBP without any crucial reforms or guardrails. Brendan Duke added in a thread posted to X and Bluesky that Senate Republicans’ proposed budget resolution sets up funding for ICE and CBP without reforms while relying on large, unspecified cuts to public services to meet fiscal targets.
Gideon Lukens posted a thread to X and Bluesky on projections by the Congressional Budget Office that 7 million people will lose Medicaid expansion coverage from 2025 to 2032 due to cuts in last year’s harmful Republican megabill.
CBPP posted a video to YouTube, X, BlueSky, Threads, and Facebook featuring Ty Jones Cox, who explained how provisions in the harmful Republican megabill are threatening access to SNAP for millions of people and will continue to cut SNAP for many more.
Ty Jones Cox also posted a thread to X and Bluesky stressing that, for the first time in 30 years, the House Agriculture appropriations bill would underfund WIC and cut benefits for participants in every state.
