In Case You Missed It…

This week at CBPP, we focused on food assistance, the federal budget, health, immigration, and state budgets and taxes.

• On food assistance, CBPP President Sharon Parrott emphasized that the Trump Administration is legally required to fund SNAP benefits through contingency reserves during the government shutdown, and that Agriculture Secretary Rollins’ claims to the contrary are false. Dottie Rosenbaum and Katie Bergh underscored that the Trump Administration can and should take steps to ensure that SNAP participants get November food benefits during the shutdown.
• On the federal budget, Kathleen Romig noted that the Trump Administration announced plans to fire staff who administer funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, threatening support for children with disabilities. Sam Berger and Devin O’Connor pointed out that the Trump Administration is purposely inflicting unnecessary pain during the shutdown, which emphasizes the need for guardrails in a funding bill.
• On health, Claire Heyison and Becky Woolf summarized answers from CBPP’s experts to frequently asked questions about premium tax credit enhancements, which will expire at the end of 2025 without congressional action.
• On health and immigration, Shelby Gonzales warned that health coverage costs may soon skyrocket for millions of people and pointed out that reversing harmful provisions in the megabill would not provide federal investment in coverage for people who are undocumented, despite false claims from Republicans.
• On state budgets and taxes, Anna Phillips recommended that states use mansion taxes to raise needed revenue in 2026.
