In Case You Missed It...

This week on Off the Charts, we talked about taxes, the economy, Medicaid, pensions, and state budgets.

  • On taxes, Nicholas Johnson explained why a bill before Congress would hurt states by allowing corporations to shelter profits from state income taxes.  Robert Tannenwald noted that many states are scaling back inefficient film tax subsidies.
  • On the economy, Chad Stone presented several charts providing context for the disappointing June jobs report.  Michael Leachman showed that state and local governments laid off 25,000 people in June and have cut 577,000 jobs since shortly after the recession began.
  • On Medicaid, Shannon Spillane explained that deep Medicaid cuts would harm an already-lean program.  Judy Solomon described a landmark study demonstrating the positive impact of Medicaid coverage.
  • On pensions, Elizabeth McNichol outlined some common-sense practices of pension plans in six states.
  • On state budgets, we updated our slideshow on the fiscal damage the recession has inflicted.

In other news, we revised our backgrounder on the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program and updated our chart book on the effects of the recession on the economy.
