In Case You Missed It…

| By CBPP

This week at CBPP we focused on state budgets and taxes, housing, food assistance, and federal taxes.

  • On state budgets and taxes, Erica Williams explained that proposals from California policymakers would bolster the stock of affordable housing and help voucher holders access higher-opportunity neighborhoods and contribute more fully to the economy.  We updated our report on higher education funding.  Michael Mitchell detailed how a change to Wisconsin’s higher education funding structure — shifting responsibility from localities to the state — could make it seem like schools there are receiving more funding than they really are.  Michael Mazerov pointed to an important new study that conclusively debunks the myth that raising state income taxes on the wealthy causes many of them to flee to lower-tax states.
  • On housing, Alicia Mazzara, Barbara Sard, and Douglas Rice noted that the number of families with children receiving federal rent subsidies has fallen to its lowest point in more than a decade, despite rising need.
  • On food assistance, Dottie Rosenbaum highlighted a new paper that calls for modernizing SNAP benefits.
  • On federal taxes, we updated our chart book on the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
