SNAP Academy Webinar Series

The SNAP Academy is a webinar series that seeks to educate state and local advocates, application assisters, and outreach workers with information on SNAP. The goal is to improve understanding of the program. 

The webinar topics include:

    1. Overview of SNAP and its role in the safety net,
    2. Who is eligible and household composition rules,
    3. How to calculate benefits,
    4. The importance of deductions,
    5. The application process, and
    6. How to navigate the recertification process.

    The next webinar in this series will take place on Tuesday, October 14, at 2 pm Eastern (11 am Pacific), and the series will continue with webinars on November 19th, December 17th, January 21st, and February 18th all at 2 pm Eastern (11 am Pacific). Each webinar will feature speakers from state and local organizations with experience working with clients and training on SNAP, including:  The Alameda County Food Banks, the Center for Civil Justice, Hunger Free Vermont, Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, and the Ohio Association of Food Banks

    Household Composition & Special Populations
    Tuesday, October 14, 2014
    2:00 pm–3:00 pm (Eastern), 11:00 am–12:00 (Pacific)
    This webinar will provide an overview of SNAP’s household composition rules with a special focus on immigrants and mixed-status households.  The webinar will detail how these rules are applied to determine household size through the use of real-life examples.  This webinar will be co-presented with the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

    Benefit Calculations and Budgeting
    Wednesday, November 19, 2014
    2:00 pm–3:00 pm (Eastern), 11:00 am–12:00 (Pacific)
    This webinar will cover SNAP’s benefit calculations with a focus on income rules and how to count income of ineligible household members.  The webinar will detail what counts as income through the use of examples.  This webinar will be co-presented with Michigan’s Center for Civil Justice.

    The Importance of Deductions
    Wednesday, December 17, 2014

    This webinar will cover SNAP’s income deductions, with a particular focus on the shelter, dependent care, and medical expense deduction.  The webinar will detail why these deductions are important and discuss strategies to ensure eligible households are utilizing those deductions.  This webinar will be co-presented with Hunger Free Vermont.

    SNAP’s Application Process

    This webinar will focus on SNAP’s application process and rights of individuals applying for the program.  This webinar will be co-presented with Ohio Association of Food Banks.

    The Renewal and Recertification Process 
    Wednesday, February 18, 2015
    2:00 pm–3:00 pm (Eastern), 11:00 am–12:00 (Pacific)
    This webinar will focus on SNAP’s renewal and recertification processes with a particular emphasis on the federal rules and policy and how states may differ in their application of the federal rules.  This webinar will be co-presented with Massachusetts Law Reform Institute.
