In Case You Missed It…

| By CBPP

This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget and taxes, health, full employment, state budgets and taxes, housing, and the economy.

  • On the federal budget and taxes, Javier Balmaceda urged the Senate to act quickly to restore needed food and health assistance to Puerto Rico and other territories, and reviewed why the Working Families Tax Relief Act would help Puerto Rico families. Richard Kogan, Hannah Katch, Dottie Rosenbaum, Douglas Rice, Kathleen Romig, Ife Floyd, and Sharon Parrott explained how President Trump’s 2020 budget mirrors last year’s in the massive cuts it proposes to low-income assistance programs.
  • On health, Aviva Aron-Dine noted how blocking a Trump rule on short-term health plans would benefit consumers. We updated our roundup on the Trump Administration’s efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.
  • On full employment, Jared Bernstein and Keith Bentele analyzed the increasing benefits and diminished costs of running a high-pressure labor market.
  • On state budgets and taxes, Cortney Sanders noted how 65 years after Brown v. Board of Education, advocates are still suing to compel states to uphold their education funding obligations. Michael Mazerov explained why states should reject corporate demands for “deferred tax” deductions. Samantha Waxman highlighted the states that will soon provide higher wages and a better shot at economic success to their millions of low-paid workers.
  • On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
