Position: Editor, Communications
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is one of the nation’s leading non-profits working on public policy issues affecting low-income families and individuals. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and influencing policy outcomes. It works on budget and tax policy, health care, social insurance, and a range of programs important to low-income people. The Center’s funding comes from private foundations and individuals.
The Center seeks an Editor to join the Communications team. This position offers an opportunity for a talented editor and writer to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to help the Center meet its policy goals. The Editor must be able to distill complex concepts into clear, easily understandable language for papers, statements, press releases, talking points, and other documents. The individual will work closely with the policy staff to edit their draft papers, commentaries, and blog posts, ranging from line-editing to restructuring content. He or she also will generate op-eds, press releases, talking points, and other materials based on Center research but aimed at a broader audience. The Editor should have experience in issue-oriented editing and writing.
- Write and edit materials for an array of key audiences, including federal and state policymakers, opinion leaders, media, and the general public.
- Edit a wide range of materials, including policy papers, commentaries, blog posts, and other documents for structure, content, and language to make them more accessible and effective.
- Extract and edit content (e.g., from a policy paper) to repurpose for other audiences and formats (e.g., draft a blog post, fact sheets, or talking points).
- Work closely with a wide range of internal clients, including the Center’s leadership, policy analysts, and the communications staff, to shape material for publishing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 5 to 7 years of experience writing in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills.
- A proven track record of producing outstanding written work — from original writing to editing — often on tight timelines, and of collaborating on documents as part of a team.
- Experience writing about policy issues.
- Ability to adapt written work to a variety of audiences and formats, and to write and edit work in the Center’s voice and style.
- Ability to incorporate feedback constructively.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
