In Case You Missed It…

| By CBPP

This week at CBPP, we focused on health care, housing, food assistance, poverty and inequality, and the economy.

  • On health care, Paul Van de Water warned that the House Republican health plan would radically restructure Medicare, increasing costs for many or most beneficiaries.  Edwin Park noted that the plan could also disrupt employer-based health insurance.  Park also described ten key facts about Medicaid.  Jesse Cross-Call pointed out that the federal government has consistently rejected proposals like Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s to impose a work requirement on unemployed childless adult Medicaid beneficiaries.
  • On housing, Alicia Mazzara highlighted Housing Choice Vouchers’ effectiveness in helping low-income families afford decent, stable housing and preventing homelessness in every state.
  • On food assistance, Dottie Rosenbaum and Brynne Keith-Jennings explained the declining number of people participating in SNAP (formerly food stamps), which reflects both an improving economy and the effects of returning time limits for unemployed childless adults.
  • On poverty and inequality, we posted our state fact sheets on the safety net’s impact and we updated our guide to historical trends in income inequality.
  • On the economy, we updated our chart book on the Legacy of the Great Recession and our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available in every state.
