Research Associate
Poverty, Income Inequality, and Welfare Reform

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a non-profit policy institute, is seeking a research associate to work with highly skilled policy analysts on issues that affect low and moderate-income families at the federal and state level.  The Center has attained a national reputation for its unique capacity to blend rigorous, timely analyses with activities designed to enable policymakers and the media to make use of its work.

The research associate will work on issues related to poverty, income inequality, and welfare reform. In the area of poverty and income inequality, the work will focus on measuring poverty among different groups, analyzing poverty and income inequality trends, researching the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality, and analyzing policies that could reduce poverty, hardship and inequality. In the area of welfare reform, the research associate will conduct research and analysis on the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and the policy choices states are making in response to new TANF legislation.  The research associate also will help senior Center staff stay current on academic research related to poverty, income inequality, and TANF.

The research associate also will work with policy analysts at state nonprofit groups around the country on these issues.  This work includes assisting these analysts with state-specific research projects on poverty, income inequality, and TANF and ensuring that they have access to important new data and research findings in these areas.

The position involves working with large microdata sets, including the Current Population Survey, the Survey on Income and Program Participation, and TANF administrative data. 

Qualifications:  Significant experience analyzing micro-data from Census household surveys or any large longitudinal survey; proficiency in programming with STATA or other statistical software; masters degree in policy, economics, or other related fields, equivalent course work, or experience; strong grounding in mathematics, econometrics, or other quantitative disciplines; strong writing skills; interest in relevant subject areas.
